Services
Welcome to our store at Janet's Antiques LLP in Madison, Wisconsin, and to our online store at http://www.janetsantiques.com. We are a family business of mother, Janet Holden Hoopes, and Elizabeth Jane Barber, daughter. We started this business in 1973 by doing antique shows. We soon had a small storefront, and then an old house, and now, by God's grace, a beautiful new shop on University and Midvale in Madison.
If you wish to sell an antique, it is advisable to make an appointment before bringing it into the shop. Alternatively, we can generally determine whether we are interested in an item from a good photograph. Japanese and Chinese decorative arts including bronzes, silver, cloisonne, porcelain, pottery and furniture.
American Towle Old Colonial pattern monogrammed vermeil sterling silver cream ladle. First issued in 1895, Towle's Old Colonial pattern reflects a Neoclassical influence from Colonial America, presented with a flanged fluted bowl, recalling architectural columnar shafts, dipping from a handle molded with two elongated beaded "C" scrolls enclosing a slender waisted lower shaft, and the upper shaft rounding between two small beaded "C" scrolls underlying an ogee-molded end punctuated with two beaded serpentine-scrolls flanking a paneled urn having a dramatic flame finial cut-out between the scrolls to suggest a "broken pediment" recalling the Early American case furniture.

What an amazingly fun an enlightening experience it was to visit this beautiful collection of antiques and their owner, Jane. I was greeted by Harley the dog who emerged from his hidey hole under Jane's desk to greet me. We wandered around for a bit until suddenly Lily, Harley's sister(?) I think, bounded in to say hello and check out the new customer.

If you're not a dog lover Jane will put the dogs in another room so you are not disturbed, but honestly, they are just lovely. I decided to look here for some furniture after looking at new pieces in various furniture stores and being very disappointed. But the real treasure here is Jane herself with her encyclopedic knowledge of the pieces in her store, the history, the kind of wood furniture is crafted from, how it's made as with hand cut dovetails and hand turned legs and how to tell if a piece is original by running your hand over the bottom of a drawer to feel the imperfections in the hand planing or the look of hand blown glass and how they managed to make glass window panes like that.

There are also really fun pieces of jewelry, china and accessories like lamps and porcelain figurines that also have a history and stories that are incredibly educational and fascinating. I had 2 pieces of furniture delivered--a lovely old rocking chair and a small work table--they were examined and things needing tightening, like legs on a rocker, or fixing, like shelves needing a little shim to be leveled were taken care of by a carpenter friend of Jane's. (I'm sorry not to recall his name right now.) They delivered the pieces to my home in perfect condition.

There are occasional sales at Janet's and they do have a lay-away plan which I'm using to purchase a beautiful table made with tiger wood! (Ask Jane!) and a lovely old hutch. I also found an amazing delft painting on a long framed tile that is a small work of art, all in blue, and some plates also, as well as a few lovely old mixing bowls and a couple small brooches, one with Persian turquoise and the other with "apple juice Bakelite" and hand carved and painted sunflowers.

So pretty! And there are stories and histories in Jane's memory for every one of the objects I bought or looked at. If you ever wanted to go to Antiques Roadshow but don't have anything to bring, go to Janet's antiques! You'll have a chance to learn the journey of many periods and types of furniture and many other objects from the past.

And if you find a piece that speaks to you and decide to take it home, Jane will write out the history of your purchase for you and send it to your home so you don't have to memorize it before you leave. I found that talking to Jane about the things in her store and their histories is a lovely way to spend an afternoon. If you're looking for a unique, well-made, high quality piece of furniture for your home I hope you stop in at Janet's Antiques! It's one of the small treasures we are so fortunate to have in Madison!

This is by far the creme de la creme that Madison has to offer (antiques). Jane Barber, the owner is knowledgeable, meticulous, and personable. Janet's Antiques is one of my favorite places to shop! I concur with other reviews, the dogs get a bad rap. They are the sweetest! You get what you pay for here: quality & reputable people & merchandise.

Our house is from the 1860s and we furnished multiple rooms with the help of Janet's antiques. We have lived with some of the furniture for 20 years and have never had an issue with quality.

This antique shop carries many high quality collections and the owner is very knowledgeable about items she has. I have seen many incredible pieces of arts, jewelries, porcelains, furnitures and more. Really appreciated the explanation that the owner provided on every single piece that I was interested in especially the cut glasses. The research showed on the receipts is unique and amazing to me. Each time that I visit the shop is a very enjoyable customer experience!

I love dogs, but this situation was strange. I walked in, and immediately there were dogs barking at me at the door. One of them was fine and friendly, but the other one kept growling and barking at me the whole time. I felt like I had to accommodate the dog the whole time I was in there. Accident waiting to happen. The owner also did nothing to keep the dog away. One of the weirdest experiences I've ever had at a business.

The two ladies working barely acknowledged me when I walked in and then proceeded to be very rude.
